Alexander D. Abkin, M.D., FACS
Dr. Alexander Abkin is a board-certified general surgeon and experienced bariatric surgeon, having performed over 6,000 bariatric procedures in the past 10 years. He performs several types of bariatric surgery procedures, including Gastric Bypass Surgery, Lap Band Surgery, Realize Band Surgery, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), ROSE Procedure, and Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG). Dr. Abkin performs most bariatric procedures laparoscopically, averaging 8 to 10 procedures per week. Dr. Abkin received his medical training at First Leningrad Medical University in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he received his M.D. in 1986. He completed his residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Dr. Abkin also has specialized training in laparoscopic and bariatric surgical techniques, completed under the guidance of Dr. Philip Schauer in Pittsburgh. In 2001, Dr. Alexander Abkin started his own successful practice, Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeons, in Florham Park, NJ. He is a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery , the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). Dr. Abkin was the first surgeons in the North East states to implement the REALIZE™ Band procedure. In addition, he is one of 29 people selected in the country to proctor and train on the use of it.
Anish Nihalani, M.D.
Dr. Nihalani is a graduate of the UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey. He completed his Advanced Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery Fellow at University Medical Center at Princeton in Princeton, N.J. and did his General Surgery Residency as Chief Resident at Montefiore North Medical Center (formerly known as Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center) in Bronx, N.Y. Besides his extensive education, training and clinical research, Dr. Nihalani has been published in several medical journals and is also fluent in five languages. He has also set up a Colorectal Cancer database at the College of Physician & Surgeons of Columbia University in New York City which tracks the short-term and long-term outcomes of surgical cancer patients. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and American Society of Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
Mikhail A. Botvinov, D.O.
Dr. Mikhail Botvinov is an experienced surgeon who has primarily focused on laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. These surgical techniques are used to treat and address issues associated with obesity and other general surgery conditions. He has a dual medical education as both a medical doctor (M.D.) and doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.). Dr. Botvinov completed medical training initially at I.M. Sechenov First Moscow Institute of Medicine in Moscow, Russia, the oldest and largest national medical higher education institution in the Russian Federation. While in Russia he worked as a general surgeon at the Institute of Laser Surgery. Dr. Botvinov obtained a National Patent for converting a gastrointestinal device to the use of carbon dioxide laser while at the National Institute of Laser Surgery, Moscow. In the United States, Dr. Botvinov completed his medical education in the College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM), Westbury, New York. His surgical training was completed in Flushing Hospital, Flushing, New York. He also completed minimally invasive,laparoscopic and bariatric training in Staten Island University Hospital, Staten Island, New York. Dr. Botvinov is licensed to practice medicine in the states of New Jersey and New York. He has joined the practice of Alexander D. Abkin, MD, FACS to continue his focus on laparoscopic surgery. He is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the American College of Physicians (ACP), the American Medical Student Association (AM SA), the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS). Dr. Botvinov is a candidate member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
Glenn Forrester, M.D., FACS
A graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Dr. Forrester earned his medical degree from St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies. Afterward, he completed a six-year surgical residency at the combined program of Our Lady of Mercy and Lincoln Medical Centers in the Bronx, NY. His fourth year of residency was devoted to clinical research in bariatric surgery under Dr. Julio Teixeira at Montefiore Medical Center. Notably, Dr. Forrester was the recipient of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons Resident Achievement Award for his program in 2007. Following graduation from his residency, Dr. Forrester gained further clinical experience at an American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery approved fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Bariatric and General Surgery at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York, NY. During his fellowship, Dr. Forrester worked in the emerging field of Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), as well as was part of one of the first surgical teams to perform this type of surgery through the use of flexible endoscopy. Dr. Forrester is board certified and a member of the American Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS), the Medical Society of New York, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS).
Angela Jack Glasnapp, M.D.
Dr. Angela Jack Glasnapp is a board certified general surgeon with specialty training in bariatric surgery and advanced minimally invasive surgery. She earned her medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY and then completed her residency training at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in Greenwich Village, NY. After residency, Dr. Glasnapp completed a one-year fellowship in advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at the Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. During her fellowship, Dr. Glasnapp performed a wide variety of laparoscopic bariatric procedures, including gastric bypass, gastric adjustable banding, sleeve gastrectomy, single-incision, and robotic-assisted bariatric surgery. In addition, she gained experience in minimally invasive esophageal, diaphragmatic, and hernia repair surgeries. Dr. Glasnapp is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), American Medical Association (AMA), American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and an associate member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
Ajay Goyal, M.D., FACS
Dr. Ajay Goyal is the founder of the New Jersey Bariatric Center. With more than 1,000 successful laparoscopic gastric band, gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic general surgery procedures completed, Dr. Goyal is a leader in the field of laparoscopic bariatric and general surgery. To ensure the best patient care and weight loss success, he employs a multi-disciplinary team approach, including nutritional, psychological and physical therapy counseling. This approach has meant a low complication rate, zero leaks and no mortalities. In 2010, New Jersey Monthly magazine named Dr. Goyal one of the top doctors for bariatric surgery. Under his leadership, the New Jersey Bariatric Center was designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Goyal is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He earned his medical degree at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn and completed a five-year surgical residency at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. Afterward, Dr. Goyal completed an American Society of Bariatric Surgery approved fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Bariatric and General Surgery at the Institute for the Minimally Invasive Surgery at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY. During his fellowship, he was involved in initial studies that examined the use of robotics in bariatric and general surgery. Dr. Goyal is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, the Medical Society of New Jersey, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. He is active in the field of bariatric and general surgery research, and has presented his results at several national conferences.
Leigh Montes, M.D.
Dr Montes is a board-certified general surgeon with training in both advanced laparoscopic and laparoscopic bariatric surgery. She obtained her Medical Degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and finished her general surgical residency at University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Montes completed an advanced laparoscopic fellowship at University of Texas in Houston, and a bariatric fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. She has experience in a breadth of general surgical and bariatric laparoscopic cases, including gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic herniorrhaphy, and laparoscopic colectomy.
Patricia L. Sullivan, BSN, RN, CNOR, CBN – JFK For Life Program Coordinator
Patricia, a graduate of the Muhlenberg School of Nursing, is a registered nurse who brings with her over 18 years of clinical nursing experience. While an RN First Assistant in the operating room, she developed an interest in the perioperative care of the bariatric surgery patient. As program coordinator she is able to supervise the entire pre and post-operative process of the patients in the JFK For Life program. Patricia oversees monthly support group meetings, organizes new patient seminars and provides pre and post operative education. Patricia is committed to making each patient’s weight loss journey successful and to provide them with the tools they need to live healthier lives.
Karen Rose, MSW, LCSW – Behavioral Therapist
Karen is a passionate and caring counselor committed to enabling her clients to achieve their goals and cope with their stressors and behavioral health issues. As a social worker with 30 years experience, her foundation was laid at NYU’s masters program on the core tenets of ego psychology and its evolutions. Her areas of focus with clients have been weight management issues, especially for people who are obese or morbidly obese and/or pre- and post-bariatric surgery, depression, chemical dependence, dual diagnosis, dementia and caregiver stress, as well as a wide range of mental illnesses. Karen uses a strong cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy approach that provides clear and highly individualized supportive counseling. Her approach to counseling and coaching empowers clients to set realistic and actionable goals to improve the quality of their lives and coping strategies both immediately and in the long term. Karen offers morning, daytime, evening, and Saturday hours. She will be your coach and counselor to help you cope with the challenges you face.
Joann Costarella – Patient Intake Representative
As the welcoming face at JFK For Life, Joann sets the tone for the office. Joann has been working in the patient care arena for over 10 years. She is extremely sensitive to the special needs of our patients and always exudes an outgoing and friendly demeanor. Her goal is to provide a positive experience for our patients and goes out of her way to make them feel comfortable. Joann believes that the “personal touch” makes all the difference! She is an invaluable asset to the program.
